A Week Of iPhone Apps Day 1: FlickIM
While third party Applications for the iPhone are hard to come by we have to resort to web based alternatives. The many Applications I have seen are either useless, mobile optimized versions of popular web sites or simply horrible. For 7 days I will be reviewing the better iPhone Web 2.0 Applications, not watered versions but fully functional Apps.
The first Application in my review of 7 will be FlickIM.
As you know the iPhone currently has no Instant Messaging application, the closest being the SMS Widget. We had a few alternatives such as Meebo or even using Google’s web interface for Gtalk but all of these took a burden on Safari and they weren’t the most elegant of way to initiate an Instant Message conversation. This is where FlickIM comes in.
FlickIM is a web based AIM client for the iPhone, sorry that’s the only protocol. One of the Application’s greatest strengths is its speed and simplicity which should be the focus of every iPhone targeted web App.
You are met with a simple login screen asking you for your user name and password but there is no indication of security through SSL or how your information is stored so take a measure of precaution.
The Instant Message App allows you to switch between conversations and scroll through messages with the use of two fingers.
FlickIM is also insanely fast on EDGE which is one of the very few Applications that can function quickly on a slow connection and in Safari.
The App is straightforward, clean and useful. If you’d like to use this App point your iPhone towards http://www.flickim.com/. I would highly recommend this App.

Just wanted to note, that actually the best IM for the IPHONE is JIVETALK. I have both FLICKIM and JIVETALK and the Jivetalk is the closest thing to a Native application. I even used to have a cingular 8525 which also didnt have a native IM feature however,IM+ was what i was using and I even like Jivetalk better for the iphone that IM+ for the windows device. Its the best overal 3rd party application in my opinon. You should do a review on that. Thanks for the great articles

@Ck, I considered including Jivetalk in my review but noticed it was in Alpha stage. I’ll wait until it at least it hits Beta before I do a review on it.

every google service is “beta”. how long has gmail been around and it still has the beta tag. I think people have forgotten what beta even means. From my playing around with jivetalk, it seemed really solid to me.

I think FlickIM is the best. They provide SMS or EMAIL alerts when someone is trying to SMS you. They reconnect you if you get disconnected and still maintains the messages. Their application is fast and the interface is slicker than either Jivetalk or IM+.

The SMS and email alerts are part of the system and continue with JiveTalk as well, and Jivetalk will reconnect you as well. As others have said (and I can attest,) Jivetalk is THE best of all the IM clients out there for the iPhone. It isn’t even close…
