If you stare into the Abyss long enough the Abyss stares back at you.

- Friedrich Nietzsche

Oh sure you’ve heard Nietzsche’s quote a million times but you’ve probably never heard his corollary written in the margins of the manuscript:

If you stare into you iPhone’s screen long enough you just look like a dork, or worse, Chris Seibold

-Freddy N.

Which is true, staring into the shiny black screen of an unpowered iPhone makes you look like someone who can’t remember to charge their iPhone. No one wants to look like the “I can’t remember to charge my iPhone guy” cause those guys are losers. Heck, if you can’t remember to charge your iPhone you are a bigger loser than the Detroit Lions. But sometimes you need to stare into your iPhone, you want to use it as a mirror of sorts so how to avoid the conundrum that is needing to look into your iPhone while not looking like a non recharging idiot? The answer is easy: Mirror App by Juice Wireless. It turns you iPhone into a reflective surface even when the iPhone is on!

Okay, okay so Mirror is probably the most useless app of all time and we were joking around. But after reading the description by Juice Wireless we couldn’t help it. Face it, you come out with an app like this and get all serious about it your company will look like an idiot. You come out with an app like this and say stuff like:

AMAZING VALUE
You can carry a mirror with you, but with the Mirror App you get 9 different frames to choose from! Imagine carrying 9 different mirrors in your pocket. Exactly, impossible. With the mirror app, possible.

or…

NEW TECHNOLOGY
With incredible, stylish and elegant frame designs, and patent pending black screen technology (*) your iPhone instantly turns into a pocket mirror.

Heck, the developer even takes a swipe at the seriously mentally ill:

STYLE & ELEGANCE. PERFECT FOR MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES
Select different frames depending on your mood. Perfect for Multiple Personality Disorder.

Sure, I would’ve changed the second “perfect” to “ideal” but the joke is still nice.

It is good to know that some developers can have a sense of humor without incorporating a fart gag. Though a farting mirror…. That played yakkety sax... Well, some dreams are too pure to come true.

  1. This popped up in my Google Alerts. I think this article requires a correction:

“the developer even takes a swipe at the seriously mentally ill”

Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), or Dissociative identity disorder, as it is currently called, is not scientifically proven to be a mental illness.

Amidst the global psychiatric and medical community there is wide controversy around the topic. Indeed, the ONLY body anywhere in the world that recognizes the condition is the American Psychiatric Association. Otherwise, the ‘condition’ is considered a socially induced phenomena. It is not considered a medical condition (or “metal illness” as you refer) and remains officially unrecognized outside of North America. Even then, there is a widespread disagreement in the North American psychiatric community about the scientific validity of the condition.

In sum, you are making a dubious assertion based on an unproven assumption and are in fact taking a swipe at the global scientific community.

I look forward to your considered retraction of such a powerful statement.

  2. yes, yes let me retract this.To be clear: MPD is not a serious mental disorder, it’s mostly controversial.

As long as we are on the topic of serious mental disorders there is one disorder that needs to be brought to the forefront of public consciousness. Sure, it’s a downer for the Holidays but more people need to be aware of Sustained Humor Impairment Trouble.

Some are born without the ability to recognize a joke while others lose the ability as the years go by. A tragedy no matter what progression the disease takes. Treatment is iffy and usually consists of multiple viewings of Raising Arizona.
